Surigao City (June 30) -- Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra flew to South Korea on June 15 together with other local government executives, urban planner and environmentalists in the Asia-Pacific region to attend the 2008 International Urban Ecological Restoration training, a short-term program of the International Urban Training (IUTC), an initiative supported by the United Nations Human Settlements Porgramme (UN-HABITAT).
The training, which took place in Gangwon Province, South Korea, from June 17-21, aimed to deliver eco-restoration as an approach to sustainable urbanization in the Asia-Pacific region, its function, value and benefits with linkage to climate change adaptation. The program was organized in a manner consolidating US and Korea lecture material, including restoration concepts and techniques.
Participants also presented case studies from their place of origin, of which the mayor presented the "Restoration of Mangrove Forests in Surigao City" project and case study. The project which was completed this year was funded by the Government of Japan, facilitated through NEDA-KR2 Productivity Enhancement Program. (PIO-Surigao/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
