Magnitude 4.6 quake hits Surigao anew

Residents in the coastal villages of Surigao del Sur facing the Pacific Ocean were alarmed when a magnitude 4.6 earthquake rocked the area on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Saturday.

However, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Caraga Region reported that there was no incident of damage or injury.

Phivolcs said the undersea quake originated some 95 kilometers east-northeast of this region’s capital city.

The magnitude 4.6 tremor happened at 9:21 in the morning, Phivolcs forecaster said.

The earthquake happened at a depth of some 94.9 kilometers.
The epicenter was estimated to be some 22 kilometers northeast of Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, the tremor was felt at Intensity II in Tandag, and Tago in Surigao del Sur; and General Luna in Surigao del Norte.

Early this month, local residents were also rattled when a 4.7 magnitude earthquake also took place some 97 kilometers off Surigao City.

The OCD likewise said that there was no report of damage to property or injury.

The Philippines sits on the “Pacific Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activities.

As this developed, authorities reminded local residents to be always on alert, as panicking might cause undue harm to persons. (mb)
