LPA likely to be felt Friday

A LOW pressure area entered the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday afternoon and has a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The LPA, which the weather bureau has been monitoring since Wednesday last week, was about 870 km east of Mindanao as of 2 p.m. yesterday.

Science Undersecretary Graciano Yumul said the "predicted storm" will likely enter at Dinagat Island northeast of Mindanao, proceed to Leyte in the Eastern Visayas and to Masbate in the Bicol region, and exit Mindoro.

"This is just the projected track. It could still change anytime," Yumul said.

"If there will be no changes, we advise nearby provinces to also prepare. The National Capital Region may also likely feel its peripheral effects by Friday," he added.

Yumul said the LPA embedded in a strong intertropical convergence zone is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rains across the country in the next 24 to 48 hours. – Angela Lopez de Leon, Malaya
