SURIGAO CITY (PIA) - The city government of Surigao through the City Tourism Office commemorated the 69th Historic Battle of Surigao Strait with the theme, “Peace: The Winning Battle” held recently at the Lipata Ferry Terminal, Barangay Lipata, this city.
The celebration commenced with a walk with light that started from Banahaw Bridge, Sitio Panubigon to Lipata Ferry Terminal Complex, followed by a memorial service officiated by Rev. Fr. Manny Quiban, DCS and Pastor Charlie Max Sickles of Fruitful Harvest International Ministry, floral offering at the sea, wreath laying at the Japanese Crematorium Marker located at the School Ground of Surigao Norte National High School (SNNHS), and film showing on the accounts of the Battle of Surigao of Strait at the City Luneta Park.
Highlighted the celebration is the lighting of Memorial Flame and lighting of Sky Lanterns by the representatives from Australian Embassy, United States of America Embassy, Japan Embassy, Philippine Navy, Department of Tourism-Caraga, City Government of Surigao, Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, and 2nd Congressional District of Surigao del Norte.
City Mayor ErnestoT. Matugas led the celebration together with Governor Sol F. Matugas and Congressman Guillermo A. Romarate, Jr, and Australian Embassy representative Hon. Stephen Burnett and United States Embassy representative Hon. Eric W. Kneedler delivered their keynote speech during the said activity.
The Battle of Surigao Strait which is commemorated every 25th of October, a subsidiary of the 2nd Battle of the Philippine Sea, shares the consideration as one of the biggest sea battles in terms of the number of warships committed and sank. Opposing fleets carried some 200,000 personnel in a theatre of war that spanned a distance 500 kilometers apart. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)
