8 areas under signal 1 as ALPA becomes 'Tonyo'

At least eight areas in Mindanao were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 as the active low-pressure area east of Mindanao developed into a tropical depression code-named "Tonyo."

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said "Tonyo" was 470 km east of Davao City as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

On the other hand, Pagasa said "Tonyo" was interacting with a cold front, and may trigger widespread rains that may cause flash floods and landslides in Eastern Visayas.

Pagasa said "Tonyo" packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and was moving west at 15 kph.

By Friday evening, it is expected to be 150 km northeast of Davao City.
By Saturday evening, it is expected to be 40 km southeast of Dipolog City. By Sunday evening, it is expected to be 330 km west of Dipolog City or 200 km southeast of Puerto Princesa City.

Areas under Storm Signal No. 1 include Surigao del Norte, Dinagat, Siargao Islands, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte, and Davao Oriental.

Pagasa warned residents in low-lying areas and mountain slopes under Signal 1 to take precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides. (GMANews.TV)
