PGMA to grace Siargao's 2nd Int’l Gamefishing Tourney

Pilar, Surigao del Norte (6 May) - Preparations are now in full swing for the three-day 2nd International Game Fishing Tournament which will be held on May 7-9, 2009 in Pilar town in the island of Siargao in Surigao del Norte with no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the guest of honor.

Organizers of the tournament bared that the President is arriving here on Thursday morning, May 7 to formally open the international game fishing competition at Barangay Centro, this municipality.

The President will do the symbolic throwing of fishing rod in the waters of Siargao signifying the official opening of the competition.

Joining the President is the CORD of Caraga and Tourism Sec. Joseph Ace Durano.

Cong. Francisco Matugas, 1st district representative confirmed in a radio interview recently that some 65 foreign and local anglers have already made their commitment to participate the said event from nine (9) countries including Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Taiwan, People´s Republic of China (PROC) and host Philippines with major sports fishing enthusiasts such as the Philippine Game Fishing Federation, Philippine Sports Fishing Club, Silver Jack and the Cebu Anglers .

Matugas expressed optimism as founder of the tournament that this international event will once again put the country in the map as an important international Game Fishing venue and will boost the island´s tourism industry. Already, Siargao features the world class surfing destination “Cloud Nine”, the largest mangrove forest in the country covering some 8,670 hectares and the tropical marine life-rich coral reefs and natural rock formations.

The President´s support for the local government efforts paved the way for the improvement of the Siargao Airport (now with Cebu Pacific flights), concreting of the Siargao Circumferential Road, the P10 M Level III Water System Development through the President´s Social Fund and funds for transport cooperatives.

Last year, the President also opened the 1st Siargao Invitational Game Fishing Tournament, also in this town. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)
