Economic boom is expected in this town as the construction of the $1.3 billion coal-fired plant here is already in full swing, it was learned Monday.
Adding to the burgeoning economic activity here is the hiring of some 4,000 construction workers as the implementation of the Sumitomo Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation’s coal-fired plant went into high gear Monday.
The company is also set to hire at least 1,000 employees and workers as the mining firm will start operation after completing the construction of the power plant.
The construction of the company’s coal-fired power plant here started on March 1 this year and is expected to be fully-operational by April 2013.
It was learned that the Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation is one of the biggest mining firms erected in the Caraga Region.
“This company is a big boost to our local economy,” said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Caraga Regional Director Brielgo O. Pagaran.
The Caraga Region’s DTI chief added that more income will be generated while producing more employment opportunities for the local residents.
Meanwhile, in the nearby town of Claver, a booming mining industry is also noted.
Claver Mayor Rosemarie Mira-Gokiangkee said these mining companies situated in her town has uplifted the lives of her constituents.
“With vast mineral resources, presence of multi-million-dollar mining companies and the opening of the largest mine refinery in this town and nearby areas, the town of Claver will surely experience a surge in economic activity which will eventually hasten development and progress in the area,” said Gokiangkee.
The town’s local chief executive gave assurance that once the mine refinery will be opened soon, Clavernons will be given the first priority during the hiring of workers.
Of the 64 mining companies in the Caraga Region, Surigao del Norte and the province of Dinagat Islands have at least 33 mining companies currently operating at various areas in the province.
At present, at least 10,000 employment opportunities have been generated by these mining companies spread all over the Caraga Region since 2007, the region’s mines and geosciences bureau also reported. (MB)

With this booming economy in claver, there is no reason why the newly elected municipal officials will not be able to implement all the projects that they have planned for claver not unless , they are corrupted again with empty promises.please follow your mission and vision for claver then and only then that your constituents will give you credit and gratitude for what you have done , so you will be re-elected again in next election. we need you to practice good governance integrity , accountability, transparency and visibility on all your projects. .An honest and Godfearing officials is the best asset that we need for our town.
is there a royalty tax on mining, just like the royalty tax in oil in palawan, if there is i hope this tax will be used for the benefit of surigaonon and not to be corrupted and if there was no royalty tax, i recommend it to the local public official of surigaonon to lobby it to congress to have it.
surigao really is a land of promise and blessed with minerals and natural tourism, that is why i suggest to the local officials of surigao and siargao to lobby and push to make our airport/airstrip more bigger to make the bigger aircraft land in our homeland.
