The Lakas-Kampi-CMD has picked newly retired Department of Education (DepEd) regional director Sol Forcadilla-Matugas as its May 2010 gubernatorial candidate in Surigao del Norte with No. l sangguniang panlalawigan member Carlos Egay, Jr. as her runningmate.Local Lakas party leaders said Matugas’ successful stint in the DepEd for the past 30 years “will serve her in good stead for the highest elective post in Surigao del Norte” where her husband, Rep. Francisco Matugas (lst district) once served as governor himself for three terms.
Matugas, who started as a teacher and rose to become schools superintendent, served as the pioneer DepEd director of Caraga region which she pushed up as first topnotcher in the National Elementary Achievement Test in the early 1990s outranking the premier regions of Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon.
When Matugas was reassigned to Eastern Visayas, she also catapulted the Waray-speaking depressed region to No. l in the National Achievement Test successively for several school years until she retired last October.
The Siargao Island-born educator said that her political platform is mainly hinged on the education department’s slogan “Edukasyon ang solusyon sa kahirapan.”
Matugas pledged to prioritize the educational advancement of local youngsters, whom she considers the future leaders of the Caraga province, through a scholarship program to help them become professionals and more productive and law-abiding citizens of Surigao del Norte. (TONY PE. RIMANDO, MB)
