An initial report from the Surigao del Norte Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and the provincial media bureau said the death toll from landslides and floods in the province has risen to four as of Thursday.
Surigao del Norte Media Bureau In-Charge Jun Parada identified the fatalities from the landslide in Malimono as Raymund M. Bonotan, 25; Carlito B. Benocella, Jr., 26; and Romeo A. Boboy.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Caraga regional office also reported that a fisherman from the island town of Socorro drowned on Tuesday evening at the Philippine Coast Guard docking area in Bilang-Bilang district in Surigao City.
In a phone interview, Parada confirmed the PIA report and identified the victim as Rodel Vertical, 35.
Parada said an investigation on the incident is ongoing.
On the other hand, Parada said the small-scale miners were killed as boulders, sand, loose soil and rocks cascaded on a slope, burying the victims alive in their mining tunnel in Malimono town's Barangay Masgad last Wednesday.
The landslide occurred at the height of continuous downpour that hit the coastal area of the town.
