Speaking before hundreds of teachers, Luistro said that if there is any province that could be an education province, it must be Surigao. “After listening to the presentation of the Educational Roadmap, I realized I am only here as a footnote,” said Luistro.
“I say that with all the sincerity in my heart because in fact, the roadmap is well-developed and well-placed. It only requires political will, and commitment from stakeholders,” Luistro added.
As presented by Gov. Sol Matugas the roadmap statas that by the year 2020, the province “shall have a God loving, responsible, productive, innovative, nationalistic and functional literate citizens.”
The roadmap intends to implement educational reforms to enable the local schools to produce competent, responsible, and globally competitive basic education learners.
To achieve that, the roadmap seeks to get the 100% participation rate, 90% achievement rate, and zero drop-out rate.
Luistro arrived Tuesday, Feb. 15 and was the keynote speaker of the Education Summit 2011 hosted by Gov. Matugas, a former DepED regional director, in close coordination with the DepED divisions of Siargao, Surigao City and Surigao del Norte held at the provincial convention center.
On K + 12 implementation in Surigao Norte
Luistro is optimistic that the enhanced K+12 program will become successful here following the presentation of the province’s Education Roadmap.
He clarified that the country’s current education system is very congested, “ang ating 10 year education ngayon ay sik-sik na sik-sik. Kung di ninyo alam, tanungin nyo ang mga teachers (Our current 10 year education is too congested. In case you didn’t know, ask the teachers).”
The DepED secretary assured everyone that this program will surely help secondary students qualify for jobs without obtaining a college degree. The enhanced K+12 program involves one (1) year of kindergarten which will be implemented this coming June this year , six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grades7 to 10) and two years of senior high school (Grades 11 to 12).
According to Luistro, the two years of senior high school will enable students to consolidate academic skills and competencies.
Luistro then suggested a specialized school in Surigao del Norte that will focus on these competencies relevant to the job market. “This school will focus on competencies in science and technology, music and arts, agriculture and fisheries, sports, business and entrepreneurship, etc.”
Luistro has high hopes that the program will be implemented effectively because “of the assured synergy of the local officials.”
The enhanced K-12 education program is one of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s proposed education reforms that covers seven years of grade school and five years of high school. (PIA)
