Surigao Norte, Surigao City now under state of calamity

Surigao del Norte and Surigao City are now under state of calamity as several towns were hit by floodwaters brought about by the tail-end of a cold front.

Gov. Sol Matugas personally asked the provincial board to hold a special session on Thursday so that the provincial government can make use of the 5% calamity fund.

Meantime, the city council also approved on Thursday, January 6, 2011 the request of City Mayor Ernesto Matugas to pass a resolution declaring the entire city under a state of calamity as many barangays were submerged with floodwaters.

Latest report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) revealed that the floods killed at least three persons.

The casualties were identified as Roberto Dalangin, 35 years old, married and a native of Barangay Cawilan, Tubod; Lorena Alutaya, 27 years old, from Brgy. Cambuayon, Bacuag; and Angelo Arriba Siega, 5 years old from Nueva Street, Surigao City.

At least 8,144 families or 38,865 persons from 104 barangays provincewide were affected.

Three houses were totally damaged, while 19 were partially damaged. Damages in infrastructure reached an estimated cost of P116.9Million. Running estimate in agriculture now reached up to P23Million.

As of press time, distribution of relief goods in the entire city and province are still going on. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)
