Operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit led by PO2 Ivy Resimo successfully blasted a decoy or dummy bomb found at the parking area of the Surigao City Airport on Tuesday, Mar. 1.

A report from the Philippine National Police (PNP) said that an Aviation Security Group officer detailed at the Surigao airport found the suspicious device at the parking area around 1:45pm. Immediately, the AFP and Quick Action Response Team dispatched their bomb sniffing dogs to the scene.

The device was initially described as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) MK2 Fragmentation Hand Grenade with wires placed inside a brown carton box.

Lacking the necessary tools to defuse the IED, PO2 Resimo decided to detonate it to set off the IED, from a safe distance, using a C4 explosive around 3:23pm.

Nearby highway was temporarily shut down during the incident and all vehicles were rerouted at the Nembusco – Bernadette Village road.

PO2 Resimo later found out that the said IED was just a replica of the MK2 grenade - made of clay. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)
