City’s Cassava Growers Receive Farm Tractor

The Honorable City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra with City Agriculturist Isaias M. Elumba, led the formal turnover of the Kubota Farm Tractor M6800 70.9 hp which forms part of the P4.85 Million grant assistance from the Spanish Government through the Agencia Española de Cooperacion Internacionale (AECI) to the Surigao City Cassava Growers Multipurpose Cooperative on June 22, 2009.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) availed of a grant from the Government of Spain entitled “Strengthening the Agro-Industrial Sector in Bicol and Caraga (SAIS-BC)” to facilitate technology adoption and resource utilization in the said regions. The project focuses on the value adding of coconut, abaca, cassava, and pineapple and will include the following components: 1) establishment of processing facilities; 2) institutional development and capability building 3) marketing assistance; and 4) project management and monitoring.

The project was designed to involve concerned attached agencies of DA like the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), the Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) and the qualified LGUs, as implementing partners.

The DA through its Regional Field Unit No. XIII took the lead in the implementation of the project in the region with the overall supervision of the DA Central Office. (Karen Acero, surigaocity.gov.ph)
